Abstract

Writing about the benefits of music from a scientific perspective inevitably involves a fascinating and awe-inspiring exercise. Few human activities manage, as music does, to simultaneously activate such different dimensions of being: reason, emotion, the body, and memory. This article brings together evidence from neuroscience, cognitive psychology, and pedagogy to examine five areas in which music demonstrates documented effects on human development: intelligence, emotional sensitivity, reading competencies, memory, and attention. This article is based on the contributions of researchers such as Howard Gardner, Stefan Koelsch, Nina Kraus, Oliver Sacks, and Daniel Levitin, whose works — built from different disciplines — converge in pointing out that music is not a complement to learning, but one of its fundamental drivers: an indispensable neuroeducational tool in the acquisition of new knowledge.
